AC Not Turning On in Chicago? Here's How to Diagnose It

An AC that won't start at all is usually one of three things: an electrical issue, a safety lockout, or a failed component. Here's how to narrow it down.

Common causes of ac not turning on

1. Tripped breaker or blown fuse

The most common cause — and the easiest to check. Open your electrical panel and look for the AC breaker (often labeled 'A/C' or 'Condenser'). If it's tripped, flip it fully OFF, then back ON. If it trips again right away, stop — there's a deeper electrical fault that needs diagnosis.

2. Thermostat issue

Dead batteries, wrong mode setting, or a failed thermostat. Replace batteries first. Set mode to 'Cool' and target 5° below room temperature. Listen for a click from the indoor air handler when the thermostat triggers.

3. Condensate float switch tripped

High-efficiency AC systems have a float switch in the condensate drain that shuts the unit off if the drain backs up. This protects your ceiling from water damage. The fix is clearing the clogged drain — then the AC will start again.

4. Failed capacitor

The capacitor stores the electrical charge that starts the compressor and fan. If it fails, you may hear a humming sound from the outdoor unit but nothing starts.

5. Bad contactor

The contactor is a relay that switches power to the outdoor unit. When it fails (often from heat or aging), the outdoor unit stays off even when the thermostat calls for cooling.

6. Control board failure

If everything else checks out, the indoor unit's control board may have failed. This requires diagnosis — boards are model-specific.

Try these checks first (60 seconds)

  1. Check the thermostat — dead batteries? Wrong mode?
  2. Check the AC breaker — trip it fully OFF then ON
  3. Check the AC disconnect switch outside (looks like a small box on the wall near the outdoor unit)
  4. Check the condensate drain pan for standing water — float switch may be tripped
  5. Listen for any humming or clicking from the outdoor unit
