AC Making Loud Noises in Chicago? What Each Sound Means

AC systems should run quietly — a steady hum is normal. Loud or unusual noises always mean something is wrong. The type of sound tells us what's failing.

Common causes of ac making noise

1. Loud banging or clanking

A loose or broken part — often a fan blade, compressor mount, or piston rod inside the compressor. Turn the AC off immediately and call us. Running with a banging compressor can destroy the unit.

2. Buzzing or humming (without starting)

Usually a failed capacitor or contactor. The system is trying to start but can't get the electrical kick it needs.

3. Squealing or screeching

A worn fan motor belt or failing motor bearings. Older AC units use belt-driven blowers; modern units have direct-drive motors with bearings that can wear out. Both are fixable but should be addressed before the motor fails completely.

4. Hissing or whistling

Refrigerant escaping from a leak in the refrigerant lines or coil. This is both a system problem (no cooling) and an environmental issue (refrigerants are regulated). EPA 608 certification is required to handle the repair.

5. Clicking that doesn't stop

Usually a failing thermostat, control board, or relay. Normal clicking happens when the system cycles on or off — continuous clicking points to a failed component.

6. Rattling or vibrating

A loose panel, debris in the outdoor unit, or worn mounting hardware. Worth diagnosing — vibration over time damages other components.

7. Gurgling sound

Usually refrigerant moving through a partially restricted line, or air trapped in the system after a recent service. If it's persistent, the system likely has a refrigerant issue.

Try these checks first (60 seconds)

  1. Note WHAT type of sound it is (bang, buzz, squeal, hiss, etc.)
  2. Note WHERE the sound is coming from (indoor unit or outdoor unit)
  3. Note WHEN it happens (startup, running, shutdown)
  4. Turn the AC OFF if you hear banging, grinding, or smell anything burning
