AC systems should run quietly — a steady hum is normal. Loud or unusual noises always mean something is wrong. The type of sound tells us what's failing.
A loose or broken part — often a fan blade, compressor mount, or piston rod inside the compressor. Turn the AC off immediately and call us. Running with a banging compressor can destroy the unit.
Usually a failed capacitor or contactor. The system is trying to start but can't get the electrical kick it needs.
A worn fan motor belt or failing motor bearings. Older AC units use belt-driven blowers; modern units have direct-drive motors with bearings that can wear out. Both are fixable but should be addressed before the motor fails completely.
Refrigerant escaping from a leak in the refrigerant lines or coil. This is both a system problem (no cooling) and an environmental issue (refrigerants are regulated). EPA 608 certification is required to handle the repair.
Usually a failing thermostat, control board, or relay. Normal clicking happens when the system cycles on or off — continuous clicking points to a failed component.
A loose panel, debris in the outdoor unit, or worn mounting hardware. Worth diagnosing — vibration over time damages other components.
Usually refrigerant moving through a partially restricted line, or air trapped in the system after a recent service. If it's persistent, the system likely has a refrigerant issue.
Any loud or unusual sound from your AC means something needs attention before it gets worse. Banging or grinding noises are urgent — turn the system off and call us same-day to prevent compressor damage.
