Burners that click without lighting, an oven that won’t hold temperature, a broiler that stays dark. SAVA repairs Viking 3, 5 and 7 Series ranges, rangetops and wall ovens across Chicago and the North Shore.
SAVA HVAC & Appliance Repair has repaired Viking ranges across Chicago and the North Shore since 2017 — the 3 Series (RVGR gas and RVDR dual fuel), the 5 and 7 Series (VGR gas and VDR dual fuel), open-burner VGIC models, and earlier Professional VGCC and VGSC ranges. A Viking range is two systems in one cabinet. On top, VSH Pro sealed burners run at 15,000 BTU, with an 18,500 BTU TruPowerPlus burner on 5 Series models, and every burner is lit by SureSpark ignition, which is designed to re-light a burner on its own if the flame goes out. Below, the oven is either gas — a 30,000 BTU bake burner and a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler — or, on dual fuel models, electric elements with TruConvec convection. Most service calls trace to ignition, temperature control or convection, and each is tested differently. Diagnosis is $79, credited toward the repair.
SureSpark needs two things at the same moment: gas arriving evenly at the burner ports, and a spark jumping from the electrode to the burner cap. When a burner clicks without lighting, one of those is missing. Blocked or damaged ports, a cap that is not sitting true on its base, moisture from a boilover, and a cracked ceramic insulator on the electrode are the usual findings. When several burners fail together, the shared spark module or its wiring becomes the suspect. We test the spark itself before replacing anything, because the symptom looks identical across all of these causes.
Because SureSpark watches for flame and re-sparks whenever it does not see one, constant clicking on a lit burner means the system has lost track of the flame. Moisture in the ignition circuit, a burner that is only partly lit around its ring, or a failing spark switch behind the knob will all do it. Liquid that reaches the control panel after a boilover can cause the same symptom, which is why we check behind the knobs as well as at the burner.
VariSimmer is built into every burner on the 5 Series, so a burner that jumps from off to a tall flame, or goes out at its lowest setting, is a fault rather than a limitation. The usual causes are the burner valve, a partly blocked port ring, or an orifice mismatch — most often on a range that has been converted between natural gas and propane. We check the rating plate against the orifices actually installed.
On current 5 Series gas ranges the oven runs on a single 30,000 BTU U-shaped burner, lit by the same SureSpark system as the cooktop. An oven that never lights, lights and then goes out, or takes far too long to reach temperature points to the ignition components, the oven gas valve, or the temperature sensing that tells the control when to fire. Older Viking ovens use different ignition hardware, which is why we confirm the model before ordering parts.
The Gourmet-Glo broiler is an infrared burner: gas burns across a surface that glows and radiates intense heat downward. When it will not light, the cause is usually on the ignition side. When it lights but glows unevenly or weakly, we look at the infrared burner itself and the gas supply to it.
Dual fuel Viking ovens use TruConvec convection: the heating element sits at the rear around the fan, so air is heated before it circulates rather than simply stirred. If convection bakes unevenly or the fan is silent, the fan motor, the convection element, or the relay feeding them has usually failed — and because the element and fan work as a pair, we test both. Some Viking ovens also use Vari-Speed Dual Flow convection, with an 8½-inch fan that runs in both directions.
Digital Viking ovens report sensor and control faults as F-codes. An oven that runs hot or cold without a code is usually a temperature sensor or calibration issue; one that shows a code is telling us which circuit to test. Common codes are listed on our Viking repair page.
Newer Viking ovens use a Gentle Close door that lowers itself slowly. Worn hinges or a flattened gasket let heat escape around the door, which shows up as longer preheats and uneven baking well before anything looks broken.
Smell gas? Leave the home and call Peoples Gas (866-556-6004) or Nicor Gas (888-642-6748) from outside before calling any repair company. Then call SAVA for the repair.
Viking ranges are built heavy — cast-iron grates, a one-piece porcelainized cooktop, commercial-weight burners — and the parts that fail are usually components: electrodes, spark modules, valves, sensors, elements and fan motors. That is why repair is the right call on most Viking ranges we see, including ones well past their original two-year warranty. Replacement starts to make sense when the oven cavity, the cooktop or the gas manifold is damaged, or when several major components are failing at once. We tell you which situation you are in before any work begins.
