Cove Dishwasher Not Drying? Why It's Different From Other Dishwashers

Cove dries with a fan, not with an exposed heating element. That single design choice changes what damp dishes actually mean — and it is why most Cove drying complaints are not faults at all.

Most Cove drying complaints we are called out for turn out to be the machine working correctly. Cove uses fan-assisted drying rather than the exposed heating element older dishwashers used to bake moisture off the load. Nothing glows, nothing bakes, and the machine relies instead on heat retained from the final rinse combined with circulated air. That is quieter, gentler on the load and far less likely to warp a plastic lid — but it does leave some surfaces damper than an old machine did. How a Cove actually dries

Cove is the newest of the three Sub-Zero Group brands, launched in 2018 alongside Sub-Zero refrigeration and Wolf cooking, and it makes dishwashers only. The drying approach reflects that focus. Rather than a hot element sitting in the bottom of the tub, the machine heats the final rinse and then uses a fan to move air through the cabinet, carrying moisture away as the load gives up its retained heat.

Two consequences follow directly, and both of them are physics rather than faults.

Plastics stay damp. Glass and ceramic hold a great deal of heat and effectively dry themselves once the door opens. Plastic holds very little, so it cools to room temperature almost immediately and any water still on it simply stays there. On a machine with an exposed element the plastic was being heated from outside; on a Cove it is not. A load of glassware coming out dry while the plastic containers on the top rack are still wet is the expected result, not a symptom.

Concave surfaces hold water. Upturned mug bases, bowl rims and cup recesses collect water that no amount of air circulation will lift, because it is sitting in a well rather than clinging as a film. This is common to every condensation-style dishwasher and is a loading characteristic rather than a machine fault.

Why rinse aid matters more on a Cove

On a conventional dishwasher, rinse aid was mostly a cosmetic matter — it reduced spotting. On a fan-assisted machine it is doing structural work. Rinse aid lowers the surface tension of water so it sheets off surfaces in a film rather than beading into droplets, and a film both drains away and evaporates far more readily than beads do. That sheeting action is performing much of the job an exposed element used to do with brute heat.

The practical upshot is that an empty or faulty rinse-aid dispenser shows up on a Cove as a drying complaint rather than a spotting one, and it is among the first things we check on site. A Cove that dried well for two years and then stopped is very often telling you about its dispenser rather than its fan.

Normal, or an actual fault?

The distinction that matters is not how wet the load is, but whether anything changed. Fan-assisted drying has always left plastics damp. It has not always left your glassware wet.

Rinse-aid dispenser failure. The dispenser can fail to release, or its seal can fail and dump the reservoir in one cycle. Either way the sheeting effect disappears and the drying performance goes with it.

Drying fan or its circuit. If the fan is not running, the machine loses the air movement half of the process entirely. Retained heat alone will not finish the job, and the symptom is a uniformly wet load rather than damp plastics.

Heating circuit or temperature sensor. If the final rinse is not reaching temperature, there is little retained heat for the fan to work with. A machine whose interior is barely warm at the end of a cycle is pointing here, and it needs measurement rather than assumption — the heater and the sensor that governs it produce the same complaint.

Filtration and spray coverage. Cove circulates filtered water through its spray arms. If coverage is compromised, the load is not being brought up to temperature evenly, and patchy drying follows patchy rinsing.

Door and panel alignment on integrated units. A panel-ready Cove carries a custom cabinet panel, and the added weight and adjustment can affect how the door sits and seals. A door that is not sealing correctly loses the heat the drying phase depends on. This is specific to integrated installations and it is one of the reasons we ask whether yours is panel-ready when you call.

What to tell us when you call

The more you can describe, the better the chance we arrive with the right part already on the truck. It helps to know:

  1. Is everything coming out wet, or only the plastics?
  2. Did it change suddenly, or drift over months?
  3. Is the inside of the machine warm when the cycle ends?
  4. Is there standing water in the bottom of the tub?
  5. Is it a panel-ready or integrated installation?
  6. Is there an error code on the display?

When to call SAVA

If the drying has genuinely changed — not simply failed to match a dishwasher you replaced — it is worth having diagnosed rather than lived with. A dispenser fault is a different repair from a fan fault, and both are different again from a heating circuit that is not reaching temperature. They present almost identically from outside the machine.

Why does my Cove dishwasher leave dishes wet?

Cove uses fan-assisted drying rather than an exposed heating element in the tub. There is no glowing element baking moisture off the load, so a Cove relies on the heat retained from the final rinse plus circulated air. Some residual moisture, particularly on plastics and on upward-facing concave surfaces, is normal behaviour for this design rather than a fault. Dishes that come out genuinely wet, or a load that has stopped drying as well as it used to, is a different matter and worth having looked at.

Is a Cove dishwasher supposed to dry as well as an older dishwasher?

Not in the same way. Older machines used an exposed heating element that dried by baking the load, which also melted plastics and used considerably more energy. Cove dries with retained heat and a fan. The result is gentler on the load and quieter, but plastics hold less heat than glass or ceramic and so stay damp longer. Owners moving from a conventional dishwasher to a Cove notice this in the first week and often assume the machine is faulty when it is working exactly as designed.

Does rinse aid matter on a Cove dishwasher?

More than on a conventional machine. Rinse aid changes the surface tension of water so it sheets off rather than beading, and on a fan-assisted system that sheeting action is doing much of the work an exposed element would otherwise do with heat. An empty or faulty rinse-aid dispenser is one of the most common reasons a Cove that used to dry well stops doing so, and it is among the first things we check on site.

When is a Cove not drying an actual fault?

When the change is sudden rather than gradual, when the interior is still hot but the load is wet, when there is standing water in the bottom at the end of a cycle, or when the machine has stopped completing its cycle normally. Those point to the drying fan, the vent, the heating circuit or its sensor, or the dispenser — components that need testing rather than adjustment.
