Star Burners that won’t light evenly, an ExtraLow simmer that won’t hold, an oven slow to heat. SAVA repairs Thermador ranges, rangetops, cooktops and wall ovens across Chicago and the North Shore.
SAVA HVAC & Appliance Repair has repaired Thermador ranges and ovens across Chicago and the North Shore since 2017 — Pro Harmony and Pro Grand ranges (PRG gas and PRD dual fuel), PCG rangetops, Masterpiece SGSX gas and Freedom induction cooktops, and Masterpiece and Professional wall ovens, including PODS steam and convection models. Thermador cooking is built around the Star Burner, whose five-point shape gives a flame perimeter 56% longer than a round burner of the same size, and ExtraLow, which holds temperatures as low as 100°F for simmering and melting. A 36-inch Pro Harmony gas range pairs 18,000 BTU front burners with a 20,500 BTU bake burner and a 17,500 BTU broil burner, and Home Connect Wi-Fi on newer models adds a layer of control electronics older ranges never had. Most calls trace to ignition, simmer control, oven temperature or those electronics. Diagnosis is $79, credited toward the repair.
A Star Burner needs gas arriving at ports spread around a five-point perimeter and a spark reaching the flame path at the same moment. When it clicks without lighting, one of those is missing. Ports blocked by a boilover, a burner cap or base that is not seated evenly, moisture around the electrode, and a cracked electrode insulator are the usual findings. If several burners fail together, the shared spark module or its wiring is the more likely cause. We test the spark before replacing anything, because every one of these faults sounds the same from the kitchen.
The point of the star shape is an even ring of flame reaching further across the pan. When some points burn tall and others stay low or dark, the ports on those points are restricted or the burner head is damaged. The result is the hot spots the design was meant to prevent. Port restrictions are cleared without enlarging the openings, because a scored port changes the flame permanently and means a new burner head.
ExtraLow is what lets a Thermador hold sauce or chocolate at temperatures most burners cannot reach. A burner that goes out at its lowest setting, or runs noticeably hotter than it used to, points to the burner valve, the ExtraLow control, or the ignition components that keep the flame established at low output. We confirm which burners carry ExtraLow on your model before testing, since the count differs between ranges.
On a 36-inch Pro Harmony gas range the oven runs a 20,500 BTU bake burner. An oven that never lights, lights and then goes out, or crawls toward temperature points to the ignition components, the oven gas valve, or the temperature sensor that tells the control when to fire. A cooktop that works while the oven does not tells us the gas supply is fine and the fault is inside the oven circuit.
The broil burner is a separate circuit from the bake burner — 17,500 BTU on a 36-inch Pro Harmony gas range — so an oven can bake normally while the broiler stays dark. We test its ignition and gas valve on their own rather than assuming the bake side is involved.
Convection Bake circulates heated air for even multi-rack baking. If results turn uneven or the fan is quiet, the convection fan motor, its heating element on electric and dual fuel ovens, or the relay feeding them has usually failed. Masterpiece wall ovens use True Convection, where the element and fan work as a pair, so we test both together.
Professional PODS steam and convection ovens and Masterpiece MEM combination ovens add systems a conventional oven does not have. Steam models carry a water system — tank, pump and steam generator — that fails in its own ways, and combination models share one cavity between two cooking methods. We confirm the exact model before the visit so the right components are in hand.
A Freedom induction cooktop heats the pan directly through induction coils driven by power electronics, cooled by an internal fan. A zone that will not recognise a pan, shuts off early, or shows an error points to the coil, the power board, the cooling fan or the controls. We diagnose which before any part is ordered.
Newer Thermador ranges and wall ovens are Wi-Fi enabled through Home Connect, which adds a control board and communication module to the appliance. Unresponsive controls, a display that resets, or a range that no longer connects can come from the control board, the module, or the wiring between them.
Smell gas? Leave the home and call Peoples Gas (866-556-6004) or Nicor Gas (888-642-6748) from outside before calling any repair company. Then call SAVA for the repair.
Thermador ranges are built on heavy grates and a porcelain maintop, and what fails is usually a component: an electrode, a spark module, a burner valve, a temperature sensor, a fan motor, an element or a control board. That is why repair is the right call on most Thermador ranges and ovens we see, including ones well past their two-year parts and labor warranty. Replacement starts to make sense when the oven cavity or the gas manifold is damaged, or when several major components are failing together. We tell you which situation you are in before any work begins.
