Thermador’s Freedom Collection is built as individual panel-ready columns in 18-, 24-, 30- and 36-inch widths — fresh food, freezer and wine — and each column has its own compressor and evaporator, so a fault in one column rarely involves the others. A fresh food column such as the T24IR905SP holds 36°F to 46°F, with a temperature-controlled drawer that runs from 30°F to 38°F. Freezer columns add an ice maker, and Thermador also builds 36-inch bottom-freezer and 42-inch side-by-side built-ins. On current Freedom columns, Thermador covers the sealed system for parts and labor through the sixth year and for parts only through the twelfth. Diagnosis is $79, credited toward the repair.
Because every Freedom column runs its own compressor and evaporator, a single warm column is a fault in that column alone. The usual causes are restricted condenser airflow, an evaporator fan that has stopped, a defrost problem that has iced the coil, a temperature sensor or control that has drifted, or — less often — the column’s own sealed system. We read the actual compartment temperature against the setting before replacing anything.
A freezer column or bottom freezer that runs warm, or builds frost on the back wall, usually has a defrost system that is not completing its cycle, or warm air getting in past a door that no longer seals. Freedom doors are hung on a heavy flush-mount hinge and often carry a custom panel, so a door that has dropped slightly out of alignment is a common cause. When airflow and defrost check out, the compressor and refrigerant charge come next.
No ice usually traces to the water supply or filter, the water inlet valve, a fill tube that has frozen, or the ice maker module itself. A freezer running only slightly warm slows ice production before the food feels soft, so we check the freezer temperature as part of every ice maker call.
Freedom fresh food columns carry ThermaFresh drawers with their own humidity and temperature management, and a temperature-controlled drawer that can run from 30°F to 38°F. When a drawer stops holding its setting while the rest of the column is fine, the fault usually sits with that drawer’s sensing or control rather than the column’s cooling.
Current Freedom columns open with a light push through Auto Door Opening, close softly, and sit perfectly flush with the cabinetry on the Freedom hinge. A door that no longer opens on its own, closes hard, or sits proud of the cabinets points to the opening assist, the hinge, or the weight of the panel it carries — and a door that does not close fully turns into a frost or cooling problem.
Freedom columns are run from a touchscreen and connect to Home Connect, with a door-open alarm and Sabbath, Economy and Vacation modes. A column in Economy mode runs warmer by design, at 43°F, so we check which mode a column is in before treating its temperature as a fault.
Thermador’s 18-inch T18IW905SP wine column has two zones that each run from 41°F to 68°F, and the 24-inch T24IW905SP has three. A single zone drifting points to that zone’s sensing and airflow; the whole column warming points to condenser airflow or the sealed system.
A refrigerant leak, a failed compressor or an evaporator that has to be replaced means recovering and recharging refrigerant, which federal rules restrict to EPA Section 608 certified technicians. SAVA is certified. On current Freedom columns, Thermador’s warranty covers the sealed system — compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer and tubing — for parts and labor through the sixth year and parts only from the seventh through the twelfth, so the age of the column matters to what a sealed-system repair costs you.
A Thermador column is sized to its opening and faced with a custom panel, so replacing it means matching that opening exactly — and because each column has its own cooling system, one failed column does not mean the whole set is at the end of its life. That is why repair, including sealed-system repair, is the right call on most Thermador refrigeration we see. Replacement starts to make sense when the liner is cracked, when a column has had repeated sealed-system failures, or when several major components are failing at once.
