Water pooling around a furnace is almost always condensate that has lost its drainage path. Where it is coming from depends on what kind of furnace you have.
Water around a furnace surprises most homeowners, but on a high-efficiency system it is expected — the question is only whether it is draining properly. Any furnace rated 90% AFUE or above extracts so much heat from the exhaust that water vapour condenses inside it, producing several gallons a day in cold weather. That water leaves through a condensate drain or pump. When the drain clogs with the mild acidity and sediment it carries, when the pump fails, or when a sidewall vent freezes in a Chicago cold snap, the water backs up and finds the floor instead. On an older mid-efficiency furnace, water is not normal and usually points to a venting problem or the air conditioning coil mounted above the cabinet. SAVA is EPA Section 608 Certified.
The most common cause on high-efficiency furnaces. Condensate is mildly acidic and carries sediment, and over a season or two the drain line, trap, or inline filter accumulates enough buildup to restrict flow. Water backs up through the cabinet and onto the floor. Many furnaces will also shut themselves down on a float switch when this happens, so a leak and a no-heat call often arrive together.
Where the furnace sits below the drain line, a small pump lifts the condensate to where it can drain. When the pump fails, its float sticks, or its discharge tubing kinks or clogs, the reservoir simply overflows. Pumps are a wear item and they do not usually give warning before they stop.
A distinctly Chicago failure. High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC out a sidewall, and in sustained cold the condensate inside that pipe can freeze near the termination. Once the pipe is restricted, water cannot drain outward and backs into the cabinet. Severe cases also block combustion airflow and shut the furnace down entirely.
The AC coil usually sits in the plenum directly above the furnace, and it produces substantial condensate whenever the air conditioning runs. If you are seeing water in summer or during shoulder season, the coil's drain pan and drain line are the far more likely source than anything in the furnace itself.
On an older 80% AFUE furnace venting into a chimney, exhaust should stay hot enough to exit as vapour. An oversized, damaged, or uninsulated flue lets it cool and condense inside the vent, and that water runs back down into the furnace. This one tends to be a chronic problem rather than a sudden one.
A whole-house humidifier mounted on the furnace or ductwork has its own water supply and drain, and either can leak in a way that looks like a furnace problem. Rarely, water in the wrong part of the cabinet can also point to a failed secondary heat exchanger, which is a safety issue rather than a plumbing one.

Heating faults rarely improve on their own, and in a Chicago winter a furnace that is struggling in November is a furnace that fails in January. If the house is not holding temperature, if a safety device keeps shutting the system down, or if anything about the sound or smell has changed, have it diagnosed rather than waited out.
