A furnace that will not start at all is a different problem from one that starts and fails, and the difference tells us where to look. When there is no response whatsoever — no inducer motor, no click, no sound from the cabinet — the cause is usually electrical: a tripped breaker, a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, or the furnace service switch that looks like a light switch beside the unit. When the furnace tries and gives up, the cause is usually a safety device refusing to close: a pressure switch, a rolled-out flame sensor, or a blocked intake or flue. Furnaces have their own dedicated circuit, and many have a service switch mounted on or beside the cabinet that looks exactly like an ordinary light switch. A tripped breaker, a blown three-amp fuse on the control board, or that switch being knocked off accounts for a large share of the no-response calls we take.
High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes out a sidewall rather than up a chimney. In a Chicago winter those pipes get sealed by drifting snow, ice buildup, or freezing rain. The pressure switch detects that exhaust cannot escape safely and refuses to allow ignition. This is a genuinely seasonal fault and we see it in volume after every heavy snowfall.
The pressure switch confirms the inducer motor is successfully drawing combustion gases out of the cabinet before any gas is released. If the switch, its tubing, or the inducer motor has failed, the furnace will not proceed past the first step of its sequence — by design.
Most control boards allow three ignition attempts. After that the furnace locks out entirely and stops responding to the thermostat until it is reset and the fault behind those failures is repaired.
A thermostat with dead batteries, a lost connection, or a failed display is not sending the call for heat in the first place. The furnace is working perfectly and simply has not been asked to run.
The control board sequences everything and the transformer supplies the low-voltage power it runs on. When either fails the furnace goes completely unresponsive, which looks identical to a power problem from the outside.
