A furnace that starts and stops every few minutes is not just inefficient — it is usually a safety device intervening, and it wears the system out fast.
Short cycling is when a furnace runs for only a few minutes, shuts down, and restarts shortly afterward, never completing a full heating cycle. SAVA HVAC & Appliance Repair has serviced gas furnaces across Chicago and the North Shore since 2017, and a healthy furnace should run ten to fifteen minutes per cycle. Anything under about seven is worth investigating. In most cases a safety device is intervening: the high-limit switch is detecting overheating from restricted airflow, or the flame sensor has stopped reliably confirming ignition. Less often the furnace is simply oversized for the house, heating the space so quickly it satisfies the thermostat before the heat exchanger has properly warmed. Short cycling matters beyond comfort — the ignition sequence is the hardest work a furnace does, and repeating it constantly shortens the life of the igniter, the blower motor, and the heat exchanger. The most frequent cause. When the blower cannot move enough air across the heat exchanger, the cabinet overheats and the high-limit switch shuts the burners down. Once things cool, the furnace fires again, overheats again, and the cycle repeats. Every one of those shutdowns is the furnace protecting itself from a restriction that has not been cleared.
As residue builds on the flame sensor it becomes intermittent — sometimes confirming the flame, sometimes not. The result is a furnace that lights, runs briefly, and shuts down when the board loses confirmation, then tries again a few minutes later.
If exhaust cannot vent freely, the pressure switch opens mid-cycle and shuts the burners down. On high-efficiency furnaces venting through a sidewall, partial snow and ice obstruction produces exactly this intermittent pattern rather than a clean failure to start.
A furnace with more capacity than the house needs will satisfy the thermostat in a few minutes and shut off, over and over. This is a sizing problem rather than a broken part, and it is common in homes where a furnace was replaced without a fresh load calculation.
A thermostat in direct sunlight, above a supply register, or on a poorly insulated exterior wall reads a temperature the rest of the house is not experiencing, and cuts the cycle short. A failing thermostat can produce the same pattern on its own.
An intermittent control board can end cycles early or misread its own safety inputs. We test for this after the more common causes have been ruled out, because the symptom overlaps heavily with the others.

Heating faults rarely improve on their own, and in a Chicago winter a furnace that is struggling in November is a furnace that fails in January.
