Homes and Furnaces in Oak Park
Oak Park has about 24,900 homes, and more than half were built before 1940. 40% are detached houses, 10% are in two- to four-unit buildings and 21% in buildings of 5 to 19 units (Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Community Data Snapshots 2026).
Many of these homes were built for radiator heat, and forced-air furnaces came later, which is why furnaces here often sit in compact basements or share space with older equipment. Ductwork added to an older house can be undersized, so a furnace that overheats and shuts itself off may be short of airflow rather than broken.
